and...

2) tabular array tennis rubbers which are affixed to each side of the blade using water-based glue and and then trimmed to fit the blade.

The most common type of rubbers are "sandwich rubbers" where the acme rubber and sponge underneath are combined into i canvas.

Hither's a side view of a racket showing the wooden blade with sandwich rubbers affixed to each side of the bract.

Note: Some rackets have rubbers with no sponge underneath, including the traditional "hardbat", simply these are much rarer than sandwich rubbers.

Size of your table lawn tennis racket

Rule 2.04.01 states...

"The noise may be of any size, shape or weight but the blade shall be flat and rigid"

In addition the rules land that at to the lowest degree 85% of the blade by thickness must exist of natural wood.

But of grade, even though your racket can exist whatsoever size y'all want, the larger information technology is, the more than difficult it will be to use.

Therefore you'll find that the bulk of rackets are all a similar size ... about 15cm (6 inches) beyond and 25cm (10 inches) long including the (10cm / iv inch) handle.

Some people like to try out a larger dissonance, like Microsoft founder Pecker Gates shown here, but they presently observe that they're too unwieldy to use finer!

Blazon and thickness of your rubbers

Rule 2.04.03 states that...

"A side of the bract used for hit the ball shall be covered with
either,
ordinary pimpled safety, with pimples outwards having a total thickness including adhesive of not more than than 2mm,
or
sandwich rubber, with pimples inwards or outwards, having a total thickness including adhesive of non more than 4mm"

Umpire checking the racket by courtesy of the ITTF

This means that the umpire should bank check the thickness of your racket coverings to make sure that they're not greater than the 2mm or 4mm allowed.

Although all rubbers that you buy should exist the correct thickness, a thespian could deliberately alter the condom on his dissonance.

Also, repeated re-gluing of rubbers tin can crusade the sponge layer to slap-up, so the umpire should always bank check the thickness.

In 2008, new rules were introduced to check the thickness of rubbers. Y'all can read about them hither.

Size of your rubbers

Dominion 2.04.04 states that...

"The covering fabric shall extend up to, just not beyond the limits of, the bract except that the part nearest the handle and gripped past the fingers may be left uncovered or covered with any textile"

This ways that your tabular array tennis rubbers should non overhang the edges of your bract, although the umpire may allow some tolerance.

As a guide, ±2mm would exist an acceptable margin to well-nigh umpires. If you have a larger overhang, the umpire will make you lot trim off any backlog rubber.

^ Top of page ^

Continuous and of even thickness

Rule 2.04.05 states that the blade and rubbers must be continuous and of fifty-fifty thickness. And so you lot need to make sure that your blade is not unduly damaged and that your rubbers have an fifty-fifty surface.

^ Top of page ^

Colour of your rubbers

Rule 2.04.06 states that...

"The surface of the covering material on a side of the blade, or of a side of the blade if it is left uncovered, shall exist matt, black on one side, and of a vivid color conspicuously distinguishable from black and from the color of the ball on the other"

Note: This dominion was updated on 1 Oct 2021 to include other bright colours in addition to vivid red. The authorised brilliant colours are pinkish, purple, green and blue.

This ways that if you accept rubber on both sides of your blade, i condom must be black and the other rubber must be a bright colour clearly distinguishable from black and from the colour of the ball.

However, if you only employ rubber on 1 side of your blade (for instance, if you use a penhold grip), yous tin can leave the other side of your bract uncovered - simply it must nevertheless be coloured black or a bright colour (depending on what colour your rubber is on the other side).

Besides, information technology's important to annotation that if you don't take a rubber on one side of your bract, so y'all cannot use that side of the dissonance to hit the ball.

You tin read more about the two colour rule and how to cull your table tennis rubbers here.

Boosters and Tuners

Treating your racket is not allowed

In the past, players used various liquids, powders and chemicals to enhance the properties of their rubbers. Sometimes information technology was just every bit a means of cleaning their rubbers, but often it was in order to significantly improve the functioning of their rubber.

However, in 2008 the rules were changed and now it's no longer allowed.

Rule 2.04.07 at present states that rubbers must be used without any physical, chemic or other treatment.

So if yous want to clean your rubbers, you can simply use plain h2o.

Worn or damaged racket

Dominion 2.04.07 states that...

"Slight deviations from continuity of surface or uniformity of colour due to accidental harm or habiliment may be allowed provided that they exercise non significantly change the characteristics of the surface"

This means that a small-scale corporeality of wear and tear is allowed, but if your rubbers are damaged so much that the ball is likely to rebound unpredictably and cause issues for your opponent, you lot'll have to supersede them.

The umpire, and ultimately the tournament referee, volition decide whether your racket is sufficiently damaged to render it illegal.

But because it's at the umpire'due south discretion, this means that one umpire may decide that your racket is OK, whilst another may decide that it's not.

But, in deciding whether your racket is legal or not, the umpire has to primarily consider the interests of your opponent.

Showing your racket to your opponent

Rule 2.04.08 states that...

"Before the outset of a lucifer and whenever he or she changes his or her noise during a match a player shall show his or her opponent and the umpire the racket he or she is about to use and shall allow them to examine information technology."

This rule was introduced in 1983 due to the proliferation of "combination" rackets in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

At that fourth dimension, players were immune to have rubbers which were the same color on both sides of their racket.

However, many players would choose ii rubbers which had completely different playing characteristics. For example, they would accept an offensive prophylactic on 1 side of their racket and a defensive rubber such every bit anti-spin or long pimples on the other side.

Therefore their opponent could non easily come across which type of rubber was existence used for each stroke, especially when the racket was constantly being "twiddled".

Why is this an important rule?

An example of how well a "combination" racket could work occurred in 1980 when England's John Hilton unexpectedly won the Men'south Singles title at the European Championships.

This victory was a major shock in Europe and there was a joke in England at the time that John was ranked at number 4 at his local YMCA (where the other players were used to playing against his "combination" racket), but number 1 in Europe.

Hither'south a demonstration of "twiddling" by the ex-England player Carl Prean

Here'southward a demonstration of "twiddling" past the ex-England player Carl Prean

Then this rule ensures that your opponent tin can at least know what rubbers you accept on your racket.

This rule was supplemented in 1986 with the "two colour" rule which says that ane side of your racket has to be blood-red and the other side has to exist black. This dominion was further updated in 2021 to include other brilliant colours in addition to ruby.

However, even though the rubbers must now exist different colours, it'due south still important to know, before the lucifer starts, which rubbers your opponent is actually using.

Therefore you lot can no longer utilize a different dissonance without your opponent (and the umpire) examining it beginning, which means that y'all can't bamboozle your opponent by using a racket which he hasn't been allowed to examine.

Irresolute your racket during a match

If you're playing in a higher level event, the following boosted Regulations will usually apply in addition to the basic rules discussed above.

Regulation iii.04.02 states that you're no longer allowed to modify your noise during a lucifer unless it's been accidentally damaged so desperately that yous can't use it.

If the umpire does permit you to change your racket, you lot must show your new racket to your opponent and to the umpire.

Leave racket on the table during intervals

Also, to prevent you lot from secretly changing your dissonance between games, yous must leave information technology on the table during the intervals between games and you must non remove it without the specific agreement of the umpire.

If the umpire does let you lot to remove your noise during an interval for any reason, both the umpire and your opponent must exist given the opportunity to inspect your dissonance earlier the next game starts.

Authorised rubbers

Table Tennis Rubber - ITTF logo

Regulation 3.02.01 states that only table tennis rubbers authorised by the International Tabular array Tennis Federation (ITTF) can be used in authorised events.

Y'all'll find a listing of authorised racket coverings hither.

Yous must also ensure that you attach them to your blade so that the ITTF logo and the maker's logo or trademark are clearly visible almost the edge of the blade (so that they tin be checked by the umpire) ... and they must only be attached to your bract with adhesives that exercise non comprise harmful volatile solvents.

(In 2008, new rules were introduced to check whether illegal adhesives have been used to braze the rubbers. You tin can read most them here)

Here's an example of the details and logos which announced on the lower portion of Butterfly Tenergy 05 rubbers which have been authorised by the ITTF.
